Better Bones with viiivPRO

One of my clients recently shared with me 7 years worth of DEXA reports (bone density scans) and medication history prior to her entrance into my program at STRONG WOMEN ROCK in Atlanta, GA.

Here is her story:

In June 2014, her diagnosis went from osteopenia to osteoporosis.

Up to this point she had been on Fosamax for many years, but with the condition worsening, she was switched to Prolia, which she stayed on until the end of 2019 when she was switched to Forteo.

Why?

She experienced a fracture in her foot, which is a common occurrence in women taking these medications.

I know, doesn’t make sense.

You take medication to keep your bones from weakening but it makes you more prone to fractures?

That’s goofy, but it’s a real thing.

Read FRACTURES CAUSED BY OSTEOPOROSIS DRUGS — IS ANYONE LISTENING? by Dr. Lani Simpson for a better understanding.

Now, I do want to be totally transparent and fair to bone density medication, so I will say that between her 2014 and 2016 DEXA reports her BONE MINERAL DENSITY (BMD) did increase slightly in her SPINE (+.8%) and her FEMUR (+3.5%).

However, between her 2016 and 2018 DEXA reports, she saw decreases in her SPINE (-.22%) and FEMUR (-5.6%).

But again, to be fair to medication, when you average her BMD values over those 5 years, she was "breaking even," but looks can be deceiving. Her FEMUR T-Score worsened from -2.1 to -2.4.

Not good.

Now let’s get to the juicy stuff:

All these years my client’s exercise of choice was water aerobics.

It’s now March 2021, and she begins my program at STRONG WOMEN ROCK.

Once a week for approximately 7 months she gives her best effort for 5 seconds in 4 separate postures on the viiivPRO.

Her DEXA exam occurs in October 2021.

Results?

2018 2021
SPINE BMD .924 1.009
T SCORE -1.1 -.0.3
FEMUR BMD .585 .650
T SCORE -2.4 -1.8

These changes show a 9.2% improvement in her SPINE BMD and an 11.1% improvement in her FEMUR BMD.

(BTW, she did make it into the 1,000 LB club by peaking at 1,051 LBS of force on the leg press, which represented 8.4 times her body weight.)

How could leg pressing the equivalent of a baby elephant not help?

These are significant changes above any number she ever had in the prior 7 years.

In addition, her medication was never able to yield such large positive changes during that time, or even prevent decreases!

But it goes so much further beyond a number on a report.

What about the improvement in posture, balance, strength, power, energy level, and increased sense of well being, which by the way, all my clients experience?

You get the good with the good.

High loading of the skeleton once a week for 7 months?

Large changes between DEXA reports?

Coincidence?

No way.

You have evidence. This is the real deal.
